Playbook – Demystify Data Strategy Principle #2

Data should flow like blood in the system — not just stored like fat. It must be used.

This playbook highlights the critical principle that data must flow freely and with purpose across the organization to generate value. Simply storing data without integrating it into decision-making and operations is a missed opportunity.

1. Data Movement and Integration

Like blood circulating through a healthy body, data should continuously move across systems, processes, and teams. It must not stay locked in silos.

2. Real-time and Near Real-time Access

Just as blood supplies oxygen continuously, data must be available in real-time (or near real-time) to drive accurate, timely decision-making.

3. Use of Data in Operations

Data must be leveraged in everyday business processes — not just for reporting. This includes front-line use, automation, and proactive alerts.

4. Avoid Hoarding

Data is not fat to be stored indefinitely "just in case." Hoarding leads to increased cost, complexity, and potential privacy risks. Retention must be intentional.

5. Value through Use

Value comes from usage, not from mere existence. Data must serve a purpose and drive action to be meaningful.

Organizations must design architectures, policies, and incentives to treat data as a bloodstream — vital, circulating, and central to enterprise function.
